August Dog Days 2019

Dog days of summer in Oklahoma.
I got a description from  The Old Farmer's Almanac  Think it is pretty spot on!

The phrase “Dog Days” conjures up the hottest, most sultry days of summer. The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists the traditional timing of the Dog Days: the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11, coinciding with the heliacal (at sunrise) rising of the Dog Star, Sirius. The rising of Sirius does not actually affect the weather (some of our hottest and most humid days occur after August 11), but for the ancient Egyptians, Sirius appeared just before the season of the Nile’s flooding, so they used the star as a “watchdog” for that event. Since its rising also coincided with a time of extreme heat, the connection with hot, sultry weather was made for all time: “Dog Days bright and clear / indicate a happy year. / But when accompanied by rain, / for better times our hopes are vain.”

Amazon has been our friend this month(nothing new) as Chuck has been buying things to make the RZR perfect for our needs.
We can't wait to take it to Arizona and explore the mountains around us.

We have been fortunate to have rain....and when I say rain, I mean quite a bit.
Our home weather station has reported we have gotten over 2.5" of rain in one day.
The total for this month was over 3.5" of rain in August....great for us!

Our grandson, Cash, got baptized on August 11th.
So very proud of this boy.
He is a joy in our life and makes the world a little brighter when he is around.
Congrats to Cash.
Pops and I love you to the moon and back.

August is the time that the "before school" frenzy begins.
Heather has to report to school a week before the kids do, and I get the honor to take care of the kids while she is gone.
This year was a little different as Cooper is still not comfortable enough to spend the night with us.
You think the bus crash hasn't left some deep wounds....just ask the parents of a Traumatic brain injured child.
Not wanting to upset Cooper and make her do something that she didn't want to do, it was just easier to go to Norman and spend the days there.

This time with the kids is always so much fun for me.
Cooper and I got an idea to do a little decorating to her bedroom.
She loved what we did and mom approved of our "decorating".
Both the kids seem to enjoy their "grandparents" time, and I know it is a highlight of my August.

Cash spent the night with us and one morning as we went out to see if we could see the monster bullfrog that lives by our mailbox, we saw a beautiful red dragon fly.
I was able to get a picture of it as he sat on a dried stalk of my once blooming Daylilly.
I had never noticed a red dragonfly.
The interesting part is that a couple of days later as I checked the mailbox, a red dragonfly lit on the same stalk of the daylilly.
Now I am not saying this was the same one, but I really, in my heart, want to think it was.

Cooper had her nails done for the first day of school.

It was the first time she was allowed to have them "dipped", and she was really excited to try it.

I think all the supplies and everything is ready for their first day of school on August 20th.

Cooper is so excited to go to her "new to her" school and start 6th grade.

Cash is equally excited to start 3rd grade this year.
My how they are growing up!

I am happy to report that the first day of school was a success, and they both are looking forward to a great school year.

I think even our DIL Heather is glad to have a classroom filled with new 1st graders!

Oh, and can't forget "Olive" the doodle....she is glad to have everyone back in school so she can enjoy her alone time and watch HGTV all by herself.

Chuck found a trailer for the RZR and has been working on it to get the wheel tie downs in the correct spots.

I stained the wood and tried to give it some protection from all the elements.
The wood in the new trailers are not near as good as the ones we have had in the past, so I felt it would help a little bit.

We have been caught up in the series "Yellowstone" with Keven Costner and have been watching it all this month.
If you haven't watched it, I really do put it on our "must see" list.
I even got a t-shirt to boast how much I love the show.

I looked out and noticed my Amaryllis was blooming.
Amazing to me that here it is late August and I have blooms.
Don't get me wrong, I love it, but seems a little late!

August 30th was a nice rainy day and filled with a lot of fun for me.
I met up with a long time friend Becky Copeland for lunch.
Gosh it had been way too long since we had actually seen each other.
Really did enjoy the lunch with her and spending time chatting about the gap in time since we had last spent time together.
This is something that I hope we are able to do again really soon.
Just can't let the time gaps be so long between visits.

What a great way to finish off the month of August.
